Breathe

Learning how to breathe properly is such an important part to exercising. It means to be thinking consciously about how to breathe as it will keep you focused, decrease any anxieties, stay in control and increase positive flow of good energy to have success with your workout.

As you walk, run or sit we should be practicing good breathing techniques to allow us to one day breath properly automatically.

The breathing technique is called Diaphragmatic Breathing or Belly Breathing. We were never taught how to breath deeper down to the lower belly but rather we were taught to take a deep breath means to make our chest rise and fall however, that is considered shallow breathing which is less exchange of oxygen. Here are the steps to perform correctly.

  1. Place one hand on your lower belly and the other on your chest to see and feel that you are doing it correctly.
  2. Take a deep breath in through your nose slowly, and inflate your belly by letting it expand and rise.
  3. Slowly exhale doing a pursed lip technique which as if you are going to blow out a candle very slowly….slower than you inhaled and by doing this, you are conditioning your lungs to stay open longer and it improves the exchange of good oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Now, that you have the technique down, try walking and practice this breathing in motion and then when your are ready to step it up, start running and do the same. This takes practice as it won’t come easy so take your time and be consistent then you will find that you will have better endurance with less fatigue, feeling great and win the race.

Good luck to you and happy breathing…
